The biggest challenge Japan faces as a shrinking and aging nation is to increase productivity through technology and innovation. For the past seven years the Japan Society of Northern California in cooperation with the Stanford University U.S.-Asia Technology Management Center has hosted the Japan-U.S. Innovation Awards Symposium in order to nurture the close ties between Japan and the San Francisco/Silicon Valley innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Every year the Symposium honors one Japanese and one American company. Together with five Japanese start-ups, they take part in an intensive day-long series of discussions that attract senior executives, academics, and technologists from around the Bay Area. At this VC Breakfast, Stanford professor Richard Dasher will moderate a discussion with two representatives from companies that have received this prestigious award: Izumo Mitsuru from Euglena and Toshihiko Honkura from Quantum Biosystems. Euglena develops and produces microalgae for human nutrition and other uses. Quantum Biosystems applies quantum mechanics to develop DNA sequencers.

The speakers will address their experiences as innovative Japanese and American companies and the opportunities and challenges they encounter as they work in both markets.

Please join us to learn about the cooperation that is taking place between Silicon Valley and Japan. See what happens when the best of Japanese creativity and American entrepreneurial skill join forces, and unimagined opportunities occur.
