Event Overview:

Safecast is a global volunteer-centered citizen science project working to empower people with data about their environments. It is structured as an NPO, funds itself on donations, and brings together several interesting themes of fact-based science, charitable giving, volunteer involvement, sustainable investing and community awareness.

Impact investing refers to investments "made into companies, organizations, and funds with the intention to generate a measurable, beneficial social or environmental impact alongside a financial return."

Following the Fukushima nuclear crisis in 2011, Safecast started by creating the bGeigie, a small device that is easy to build and allows citizens to monitor radiation levels in their own communities. The bGeigie transmits these measurements and the GPS location to a central website that shows a map of conditions in each location. (See the map at www.safecast.org)

Seven years later, Safecast maintains the largest open dataset of background radiation measurements ever collected: over 90 million readings to date and growing daily. It is currently building out a network of sensors to monitor PM1.0, PM2.5, PM10 on a global scale.

Safecast believes that having more freely available open data is better for everyone. Everything it does is aimed at putting data and data collection know-how in the hands of people worldwide. All data collected by Safecast is released under a CC0 public domain designation. Anyone is free to use it for free with no licensing restrictions.

Safecast is gaining favorable media attention, such as this article (https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gear/a19411915/the-diy-geiger-counter-that-united-scientists-after-fukushima/).

Come to talk with the founder of Safecast and to learn more about how this grassroots organization is transforming the concepts of Citizen Science and Impact Investing.
