The Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) was established on April 1, 2015, for the purpose of improving medicine through research and development in
Japan and with the goal to fast-track medical R&D that directly benefits people, not only by extending life spans, but also by improving quality of life.

AMED engages in research and development in the field of medicine, establishes and maintains an environment for medical R&D, and provides funding, in order to promote
integrated medical R&D. This includes everything from basic research to practical applications to smoothly achieve the application of outcomes and the comprehensive and
effective establishment/maintenance of an environment for medical R&D.
AMED's role is to provide a one-stop service for research expenditures by consolidating the budgets for research, which had been previously allocated from a number of different sources—the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. AMED aims to achieve the world’s highest level of medical care/service and to form a society in which people live long, healthy lives by promoting integrated research and development, from basic research to practical application, and by promoting growth in medical R&D.

Dr. Makoto Suematsu, the founding and current President of AMED, will provide his update on AMED's many activities, challenges, and accomplishments since its establishment two-
years ago and will provide an overview of his bold vision for the way forward. Japan is a leader in medical research and AMED was established to become the "control tower" for
targeted R&D funding allocation and a catalyst for future innovation. Much has happened since the founding of AMED, if you are in the healthcare industry, this is one event you will not want to miss.

This event is co-hosted by the ACCJ and the European Business Council (EBC), and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).
