Event Overview:

On December 26, METI opened a call for public comments on a draft report entitled Governance Innovation: Redesigning Law and Architecture in the Age of Society 5.0, which explains the need for new governance models in light of the dramatic changes to Japanese society occurring as a result of Big Data, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and other digital technologies.

At the 2019 G20 Summit in Osaka, which was hosted by Japan last June, member countries agreed on the concept of Data Free Flow with Trust and launched the Osaka Track, a framework under which member countries will hold international discussions on policies that take full advantage of the potential presented by data and the digital economy. And in August, METI inaugurated the Study Group on a New Governance Model in Society 5.0 to bring together experts from a wide variety of fields, including law, economy, technologies and businesses.

At this event, Director Yohei Matsuda and Deputy Director Hiroki Habuka of the METI Commerce & Information Policy Bureau’s Information Economy Division will share their views on the issue and insight on next steps.
