Inbound tourism is one of Japan’s most powerful economic drivers, with 2024 spending reaching ¥8.1 trillion ($53.3 billion) and accounting for 7.5 percent of GDP. Japan aims to welcome 60 million inbound tourists by 2030. But “tourism” today goes far beyond sightseeing; it encompasses business, education, cultural exchange, events, investment, and innovation.
Today’s Takanawa Gateway once hosted the Takanawa Okido, the large wooden gate marking Edo’s southern entrance. It remains a symbolic point of welcome. This event will use that legacy as a lens to explore how Japan can reimagine tourism by melding its tradition of omotenashi with the needs of a global, connected future.
The panel discussion will bring together leaders from hospitality, transportation, and urban planning to discuss how Tokyo and Japan can leverage inbound tourism to develop new opportunities for growth. Through this exchange, attendees will gain insights into Japan’s inbound strategies, cross-sector collaboration, and how ACCJ members can position their organizations to thrive in this new era.
Who should attend?
Professionals in tourism, hospitality, transportation, urban planning, real estate development, and foreign direct investment—anyone interested in the larger story of Japan’s transformation and its evolving role in the world.
After the panel …
Bring your walking shoes! JR East will lead an exclusive guided tour of the Takanawa Gateway complex, offering a behind-the-scenes look at one of Tokyo’s most ambitious new urban developments. Separate registration required!
